2005 ESP Strongman Competition

The Competitors at the 2005 ESP Strongman Competition

What an exciting competition we had this year. With over 25 participants this competition was a huge success. Defending Strongman Mark Mackey was back to compete, and the stage was set to see some pretty impressive numbers.

The competition was set with 6 events and one mystery event. Athletes ranged in age from 14-18 years old. The first event of the day was the 40 yard tire flip. Mark Mackey showed that he was up to the challenge by setting a record in the event with a time of 31.91 seconds. Now it was time for the other competitiors to step it up. The next event was the pull-up contest. This time the shock came when freshman Derek Day knocked Mackey out of first place wit ha score of 15 pullups to 14. The 3rd event was the tire push up the hill. The competitors had to push a 200lb tire up a hill in the fastest time possible. Mark Mackey wanted to reclaim his dominance and did so rather easily winning by over 5 seconds over than the second place finisher. The farmers walk was next, where our competitiors carried 80lb dumbells 40 yards up and back in the shortest time possible. Mackey once again captured first place wit ha time of 17.82 seconds. The next event was supposed to be a tractor pull, but because Nate Linn broke the tractor, the event had to be a sled pull. With about 220lb and a slight incline the athlete had to pull the sled 40 yards. After Jared Haas's impressive effort of 15 seconds most audience members thought that it would stand up as the winning time. But low and behold Mackey came through again, smashing Jared's time with a 12.47 second pull. It was starting to become clear that the favorite in the event was living up to his expectations. The last and hardest of the day was the 40 yard tractor push followed by a 40 yard tire flip. This event showed sheer determination from all of our competitiors. Mark Mackey set the bar high enough for victory as he finished in 44.35 seconds.

The mystery event was the last of the day - designed by United States Navy man John Connelly. John had our competitiors weave around cones set up in a sand pit, followed by a 40 yard tire pick up, along with 20 pushups, and a finished football throw through a tire. Needless to say Mark Mackey won this event as well.

The victory was attained by Mark Mackey but close on his heels finished Jared Haas, who will be looking to bring home the ESP Strongest man crown next year.

I want to thank all of the competitiors who to place in this event. Our athletes showed true will and determination, giving their all to become the ESP Strongest man. I would also like to thank the Ark's, Denny Dutt, John Connelly, Ashley Adams, Mr. Day, and every parent who came to watch their sons compete for greatness.
